What is a Sitz Bath? A sitz bath is a warm, therapeutic bath used to heal and cleanse the perineum (the space between the genitals and anus).
Your doctor may suggest one if you have hemorrhoids, an anal fissure, or if you have just had a baby.
Sitz baths can be used anytime as part of your regular personal hygiene routine; however, they are especially recommended for women who have recently given birth vaginally. The warm water used in a sitz bath increases blood flow to the perineal area and promotes faster healing.
Reasonably simple to perform, sitz baths can be done with a unique pan fitted on a toilet or in a regular bathtub, and they do not require a doctor’s prescription.
A sitz bath is typically used as a home treatment for the following:
– Hemorrhoids
– After a vaginal delivery
– Anal fissure, or small tear in the skin lining the opening of the anus
– A condition that affects the prostate gland called prostatitis
– Constipation or diarrhea
Why do a Sitz Bath?
Soaking in the water at a mild temperature can help speed up the healing process by boosting blood flow.
Sitz Bath benefits
A sitz bath can offer relief from soreness, burning, and inflammation, but you may need other treatments as well.
Benefits include:
– pain relief, including from an episiotomy or hemorrhoids
– relaxation
– cleansing
– itch relief
Risks
There are very few risks associated with sitz baths. Performing one is considered very safe. There is a limited risk of infection to the perineal area if the bath is not adequately cleaned, and germs enter through cuts or surgical wounds. On the extremely rare chance this occurs and pain or itching increases, stop taking sitz baths and consult with your doctor.
